We bought our house after a similar situation with the previous owners, and it all needed to be cleaned out. The brown layer over everything is years of third-hand cigarette smoke buildup. We wound up needing to gut the place, because we have chronic illnesses that would react to the lingering chemicals absorbed into the sheetrock, even once the visible layer of tar had been cleared away. Glad you were able to save the family from the hardest work. It’s a brutal and heartbreaking situation. The wife in our situation is doing much better in long-term care now. The husband passed away in the home after a fall.
